A Sinterklaas story for all

Lola's Sint

Looking for a better way to tell the Sinterklaas story to her mixed race daughter, Kristina G Langarika decided she would just have to write it herself. The author joined EBR this morning to tell us more about the results, the newly published ‘Lola’s Sint’ and the background to how she came to write the story. The book enables all those uncomfortable with the portrayal of the Zwarte Pieten as bumbling servant-clowns to celebrate the story without the racially offensive characters. Gone are the gold earrings – instead the author has illustrated her book with Piets of assorted skin tones. Realising that it may not be that easy or necessary to erradicate the Netherlands’ favourite holiday tradition, the author has provided us with an example of how to find a middle way. It’s also simply, a good story book. And although there’s quite some weeks before the Sinterklaas acitivities begin, if you want a copy of Lola’s Sint you are advised to get in quick before the current stock sells out… But for a chance to win a copy of Lola’s Sint – email us at shout@englishbreakfast.nl (subject: Lola’s Sint).
